Restricted Events
As previously mentioned Tango Events come in all shapes & sizes to suit every taste. Nowadays they all have reasonable capacity but could be more or less limited depending on the size of the venue. The more popular events generally seem to be gender balanced and often oversubscribed which leads to them being fully booked shortly after registration opens.
Some events are so popular and in such high demand that organisers are frequently finding it very difficult to accomodate even their own friends never mind anyone else. Often these type of events tend go somewhat underground in that they are either listed behind closed groups on Facebook or appear restricted in some way, possibly not advertises in the usual manner e.g. no accompanying Facebook event. They are not secret groups as such but perhaps they might be a little more difficult to find and the registration for these type of events can take place anywhere between 3-6 months prior to the event.
However for all the curious among you here is a sample list of groups which are publicly visible on Facebook etc. Nobody can guarantee you will be accepted to any of these groups so pursue with caution and do not feel discouraged if you do not manage to get in straight away. Some things just take time and perhaps broadening the network of Tango friends may be advisable in order to speed things along.
A piece of advice for all you newbies out there
You know all you folks dancing for only about 5 years or so
Nobody likes a smartass! Not in everyday life and especially not in Tango. So be respectful at all times! Towards people you meet in the street, the elderly, the vulnerable, the less well off, the dancers you meet at the Milonga or any kind of Tango Event etc. Oh and that also includes organisers of super popular Tango events.
We are all just people like you and me and if I do not put up with any crap, why on earth should anyone else? Be nice & play fair and that alone is usually enough to open doors. Just saying!
